Three Washington counties, three different rulebooks. Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom each set their own septic requirement for a home sale, and until the statewide rule arrives on February 1, 2027 the county your property sits in is what decides which document you need and when it is due. Pick your county below. Each page explains that county's requirement in plain English, links every figure back to the health department that issues it, and connects you with an independent local septic contractor certified by that county.

Choose your county

• Snohomish County septic rules, county seat Everett. From November 1, 2026, sellers complete a Report of Property Transfer and the health department has to accept it before closing. An accepted report is good for 12 months.
• Skagit County septic rules, county seat Mount Vernon. An operation and maintenance inspection is required before a property transfer, with the current requirements and forms published by Skagit County Public Health.
• Whatcom County septic rules, county seat Bellingham. A current Report of System Status, a ROSS, must be on file with the county when a home is offered for sale, and a homeowner may not evaluate their own system for a sale.

Individual towns and cities do not have their own pages yet. Rather than publish thin pages with a place name swapped in, we are adding them only as the local detail is checked against a primary source. Until then, the county page is the accurate one for every address in that county.
